Why see a Learning Skills
Advisor?
The Learning Skills Unit helps students with learning.
We provide a free confidential service for all students
at CQU MIC. Some students want help with general
problems such as getting organized or where to find
information. Others have more specific questions about
an assignment.
When you come to the Learning
Skills Unit for help with an assignment, please bring:
-A copy of the question.
-Your unit profile and study guide.
-Your written plan of the assignment
-Your work so far (with at least double-spacing to allow
for corrections and questions).
-Any relevant referral sheets.
The Learning Skills Unit can
help you individually with:
-Understanding the question.
-Developing a writing plan.
-Writing clear sentences.
-Structuring your assignment.
-Making sure your answer is relevant.
-Developing logical discussion.
-Using the literature in writing.
-Referencing correctly.
-Ensuring grammar is correct.
-Making your meaning clear.
-Managing academic demands.
-Developing editing strategies.
-Improving the quality of your academic work.
-Preparing for oral presentations.
Workshops/ Group sessions: The Learning Skills Unit also runs various group
sessions and workshops. These run on a weekly basis.
Bookings are generally not needed for these sessions and
students are encouraged to attend wherever possible. We
offer:
-Generic workshops- essay, report writing and
referencing.
-Course-specific work-groups (note these are not to be
attended in place of lectures or tutorials.
-English language development classes.
A current timetable of group sessions is available in
the LSU.

resources that are free to students.
There are checklists to guide many aspects of your study
including:
-Essay Writing
-Report Writing

-Case Studies
-Time Management and Study Planning
and many more.
These guides are available from the LSU or from your
MyCQUMIC page.
Students can also access books on improving academic
writing.
PLEASE REMEMBER:
The LSU does not offer a proofreading or editing service
where you can just leave assignments for correction. We
use your work to teach you to write well, so
appointments must be made well before due dates.
Bookings are taken 2 weeks in advance.
The LSU is not a substitute for lectures and tutorials.
If you do not attend lectures and tutorials, the LSU
staff will be unable to help you.
LSU staff cannot estimate a final grade for your work.
We cannot guarantee distinctions! You need to work on
this with our help. Remember - improvement takes time
and hard work
Bookings
Students can work with Learning skills advisors either
individually or on a group basis. Please note however,
that students are limited to 1 (hour) individual
appointment in any given week. Attendance at group
sessions however is unlimited. Please see LSU staff for
the current timetable and check for available group
sessions.
All individual appointments must be booked in advance
either in person or over the phone. If students are
unable to attend an appointment, they are expected to
notify the Learning Skills Unit prior to that
appointment time.
Students should also note that the Learning Skills Unit
has a 48-hour policy in regards to working with
students. Staff will not take an initial appointment
with a student for an assignment if it is due that same
